educationcents.org, was created by CollegeInvest, a not-for-profit division of the Colorado Department of Higher Education.
The primary goal of the program is to improve financial literacy for students and their families and to understand the positive impact higher education can have on their financial future. Upon completing the curriculum, users will be equipped with the money management skills to help them meet their immediate and future financial goals.
The team began the design of the Web site laying out its structure or information architecture. Focusing on the global navigation, DATA defined three tiers of the site that interacted with each other on a consistent level. The interaction design targeted flow and simplicity. The team wanted to enable users to move through the site efficiently and get to the content quickly while still offering fun, interactive pieces to encourage the audience to engage.
In parallel with the interaction design process, DATA created the visual design for Education Cents. The team went through several rounds of brand exploration, which expanded the visual direction for the site. Once the interaction design and branding were approved, the team developed detailed graphic page designs.
Leveraging the user experience and visual designs, DATA developed a custom Web application, built within a content management system (CMS) for the client's convenience in managing the site. This online learning application is presented in self-paced units that contain fully-integrated, interactive and engaging tools to facilitate learning such as budget worksheets, blogs, calculators, quizzes, Flash exercises, video segments and animation. The addition of ecommerce provides the ability to incentivize learning, as users earn points for various activities and can redeem those points for rewards. A facilitator portal allows teachers to bind their students into online communities where they can monitor group and individual progress communicating through the use of message boards and forums.
educationcents.org, has an impressive 8-minute page view average and has been adopted as curriculum by several county school systems including Boulder Valley.
